Hailey Bieber has shared a surprising admission about her family life as she prepares to become a mother.
The 27-year-old is expecting her first baby with her husband Justin Bieber, 30, which they announced in May with a video of their vow renewal.
As the Rhode business owner embarks on the next chapter of her life, she has reflected on her own upbringing and admits that she’s no longer ‘super close’ with her own family.
‘I’m not super close with my family at this point in my life because I feel like I’m very independent,’ she explained to W Magazine.
‘I’m my own individual now, and I’ve built my own family.
‘But when I look back on my childhood and how I grew up, I have very fond, beautiful memories.’
It comes after her father Stephen Baldwin pleaded for prayers for the couple in February as they fought an issue privately.
The 58-year-old actor shared an Instagram post which said: ‘Christians, please when you think of Justin and Hailey, take a moment to offer a little prayer for them to have wisdom, protection, and to draw close to the Lord.’
However, TMZ later reported that Hailey wasn’t pleased with her father for drawing attention to them by sharing the post.
At the time, family friend Victor Marx fuelled rumours of strife by saying in a post that there were ‘special challenges that folks in high visibility positions face … they often face spiritual warfare that … seeks to ship-wreck their faith, marriage and life in general.’
Hailey’s family is full of celebrities – as well as her father being The Usual Suspects actor Stephen, her mother is graphic designer Kennya Deodato Baldwin, and her older sister Alaia Baldwin has gone into the modelling industry.
When Hailey posted the pregnancy announcement on Instagram, Stephen wrote: ‘Love you guys ❤️ blessed beyond words🙏🏼 praise God 👶🏼let’s get ready to have some fun y’all 🎉.’
Her famous relatives don’t end there – her uncle is actor Alec Baldwin, who is also set to become a reality star. He will be starring in a fly-on-the-wall show with his wife Hilaria, but by the sounds of it, there won’t be any Bieber family cameos.
Earlier this month, Alec was in court for an involuntary manslaughter trial into the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was fatally shot by a gun he was holding on the set of Rust in 2021. The trial was officially dismissed just one week in, following his legal team’s demands.
Hailey explained that signing with a modelling agency while still only 17 contributed to her growing up fast away from her family.
‘I started travelling the world, making my own money,’ she recalled. ‘I got my own apartment and had to learn how to live on my own and pay bills. That pushed me into adulthood kind of quickly, when most of my friends were just leaving for college.’
Aged just 21, Hailey married popstar Justin, which she previously called ‘insanely young’ and added it ‘sounds almost ridiculous’. However, it was clearly the right decision for the couple as they’ve been married for six years and counting.
Now they are set to reach another milestone in their relationship, but going from a two to a three is something Hailey initially felt emotional about.
‘In the beginning [of pregnancy], it was super emotional for me. Like, “I love this human so much. How can I possibly bring someone else into this?” I’m trying to soak in these days of it being Justin and me, just the two of us,’ she shared.
By the time they went public with their news, Hailey was already six months pregnant.
Although Hailey predicts that if she could have kept the happy news hidden until the baby arrived, she wanted to be able to enjoy the experience ‘outwardly’.
‘I felt like I was hiding this big secret, and it didn’t feel good. I wanted the freedom to go out and live my life,’ she said.
Also in the interview, Hailey said that negativity directed towards her as a public figure never gets easier.
‘I used to try to act like it hurts less and less. I’ve tried to think that you get used to it at a certain point, that this is what’s going to be said and this is how people are going to be. But I realise that it doesn’t actually ever hurt any less,’ she explained.
For the accompanying photos for the magazine, Hailey posed in rural settings and looked beautiful while showing off her growing bump.
The full interview is available at www.WMagazine.com. W Magazine’s Summer Issue is on stands July 30th.
